The portrait (ancient head on modern bust) is from the Vatican Museum, Sala dei Busti, Inv. 708. It was identified by early scholars as Pescennius Niger on the basis of similarity to numismatic portraits. There are surprisingly many different coin portraits of Niger, given his short reign. While the head may be dated to the time of Niger based on sculpture style, there is only a passing similarity between this marble head and fairly-consistent coin portraits; it is unlikely this this marble head is Pescennius Niger.
